Have you ever heard of Dr. Mark Hyman? I referenced him before in a prior post, Health & Heredity: The Curse of Being a Black Woman. I was introduced to him as a student at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I love his work because he is one of the few physicians who works hard on educating people about reversing lifestyle diseases — chronic diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes — through eating real food and exercising. Here is a great video giving you a taste of what he is all about.
The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook
His latest project is a cookbook, The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook. It boasts having “more than 175 ultra-tasty recipes for Total Health and Weight Loss.” I have to admit, many cookbooks that claim to assist in lowering blood sugar have recipes that look pretty, well… DRY. Not this cookbook! Are you ready to try recipes like Spaghetti Squash Pad Thai, Lemony Greek Pan-Roasted Chickpeas, and Spicy Sage Turkey Sausage? Yeah, no diet food here! This cookbook is great for those with international taste buds! WOULD YOU LIKE A CHANCE TO WIN A COPY? READ ON FOR MORE INFORMATION!
Blood Sugar and Your Fibroids
When most people hear of high blood sugar, they probably think about diabetics. The truth is that blood sugar and your fibroids have an intimate connection that many women do not make.
In short, your blood sugar, or glucose, is energy that fuels your body. Food sources of glucose include refined sugars, grains, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products. The problem for many of us is that we consume too many of the wrong foods that release too much glucose into your blood and your insulin is not able to control it. The wrong foods include white sugar, white potatoes (i.e., french fries), white rice, white pasta, etc. This refers to all processed foods. The more you eat these “wrong foods” (or foods that increase your blood sugar too quickly), the more likely you are to develop fibroids, as stated in the Black Women’s Health Study.
Dr. Hyman’s cookbook is not about fibroids and he has no connection to the above-mentioned study. However, Dr. Hyman is about looking at general health and lifestyle practices that can lead to diseases that are preventable AND reversible. He gives great advice on how to buy healthy food, how spices can support your health, and principles for being present at meals. I LOVE this book and encourage you to get a copy for yourself.
