What images come to your mind when you think of a detox? For many who are not familiar with detoxing, they may see images of severe sugar withdrawal symptoms like migraines. Others may think detoxing will lead to chronic diarrhea. I won’t lie to you… Both of these scenarios can happen on some types of detoxes. However what I have to share with you today is nothing like either of these scenarios at all.
Your Liver and Your Reproductive System: A Recap
Yesterday, I shared with you a little known secret to many women with fibroids of the connection between your liver and your reproductive system. Fibroids are mostly fed through the increase of estrogen in your body. The estrogen is created by your own body. However you are also inundated with estrogen from your food and chemicals in plastics, perfume, cleaning solutions, etc. Your liver tries its best to metabolize this excess liver, however our poor diets and sedentary lifestyles tend to keep our liver from functioning at it absolute best. It is possible to help your liver (and other elimination channels in the body like your colon) to keep it moving through the foods we eat on a daily basis. Here are a few of the foods that can help you clean your liver naturally.
Garlic & Lemons: More than just the name of this blog…
I swear to you… When I began this blog and named it Garlic & Lemons, it was purely because I loved this flavor combination. Yes, I knew it also had some medicinal properties, but had no idea that it had a connection to cleansing the liver. It turns out that raw garlic can ignite enzymes in the liver that help it flush out toxins. A bit of lemon juice in your water in the morning will also help to strengthen liver enzymes and further aid in flushing out toxins. Who knew???
Eat Those Leafy Greens!
We all know that dark, leafy greens are good for us. But how how many of you eat greens on a daily basis? Greens have a tendency to be the one food that gets left out the most in the American diet. Dark, leafy greens can crowd out heavy metals found in chemicals and pesticides that can clog your liver. Try a variety of greens like kale, mustard, and dandelion in salads, used as a topping on sandwiches in place of iceberg lettuce, or lightly cooked in extra virgin olive oil and some chopped garlic.
Many of the breads and cereals we eat on a daily basis have little to no nutritional value. Take just about any loaf of bread in the grocery store and you can smash the whole loaf between your two hands. It is filled with more air than grain. Many of our ancestors ate whole grains as they were easy to cook, readily available, can be made for large families, could fill you up quicker and longer, and were cheap. For many whole grains, this is still quite true. I recently went to my local grocery store and found a pound of pearled barley for 99 cents. I have found millet in international grocery stores for an even cheaper price. Other grains like quinoa and farro have a tendency to be more expensive as the “food elite” have made them into the designer grain that everyone should be eating. Shop around and see what kinds of whole grains you can find in your local stores. International grocery stores tend to have a wide variety of grains at cheap prices.
Turmeric is what gives curry its golden yellow color. If you know anything about ayurvedic medicine and recipes, then you will see turmeric as a common ingredient. Turmeric is good for aiding the liver in flushing out carcinogens, or cancer causing substances, in the body. This is particularly important as breast cancer is also a disease that is fed through excess estrogen in the body. Thus cleansing the liver can have a greater affect on your body than just getting rid of fibroids.
Today’s Recipe: Apple Dandelion Salad
Spring is the time to add more bitter greens to your diet so that you can rid your body of some of the heavier foods consumed during the cold, winter months. What is great about this salad is that just about each ingredient plays a large role in detoxifying your liver! How great is that? Foods are meant to nourish and cleanse your body. This does not mean that we cannot have certain foods for recreation. However the basis of our daily diet should be good, quality food like what you will get in today’s recipe.
Apple Dandelion Salad
1 bunch dandelion greens
2 apples (I prefer Pink Lady, but use what you like)
2 lemons, juiced
1 small garlic clove
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon turmeric
black salt OR sea salt, to taste
black pepper, to taste
- Wash your dandelion leaves and chop into small pieces. Dry and place in a large serving bowl.
- Mince one scallion and mix with the dandelion leaves.
- Core and chop one apple into bite-sized pieces. Mix it in the salad.
- FOR THE DRESSING: Place remaining ingredients in a blender. If you do not have a quality, high speed blender like a Vitamix, you should core, peel, and chop your apple into small pieces. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. If the dressing is too watery, add more olive oil and blend until creamy. Not sweet enough? Add more apple.
- Mix the salad dressing with the greens. Allow the salad to marinate for at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator before eating.
